These posters were created primarily for various shows The Violet Hour played in and around Baltimore: most of them were screen printed by Chris Day. One exception is a mixed media flyer from 2006 that was later included in Elena Johnston’s book, Paper Kingdom: A Collection of Baltimore Rock Posters.
The first graphic designs I ever created were show flyers. In the 1990s–with no software and no training–this would have involved scotch tape, cut-up Xeroxes of other people’s images, and a Sharpie. Although the materials and methodology have changed slightly since then, the ethic remains the same: If you want it done right, you better do it yourself. That, and it’s best to forget about traditional rules of legibility: if the viewer can’t decipher it, it’s probably not for them.
