Here’s Bernie Sanders, back when his handlers didn’t make him comb his hair. I really enjoy creating vector portraits. Although they can be somewhat time consuming, I think I actually prefer doing it this way over digital painting. My fellow BAI student Meredith Burke has shown me how amazing the blob brush tool can be, but this portrait was created entirely with the pen tool. Bernie has a lot of wrinkles and his hair is obviously crazy, so this was a really fun and idiosyncratic face to draw! Additionally, I discovered the gradient mapping feature in photoshop, which generated some pretty incredible results à la the more psychedelic moments in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
